Irving Penn’s Still Lifes

Beyond functionality, food is an inherent part of our visual language –  particularly in the case of the still life. Irving Penn was known widely for his still lifes and portraiture –  Picasso, Dietrich, Dali,  Hitchcock, Grace Kelly, Capote, Stravinsky and Kate Moss, to name a few. Moody, minimalist settings and low-key lighting were characteristic of his style and carried through to his still lifes – the bulk of which were done for Vogue lifestyle editorials in the seventies. Austere and playful, satirical and symbolic, scarce and opulent they seem connect us with the ephemeral quality of life – with objects, people and things.
