Last year the shores and dancefloors of Australia were graced with Brainfeeder record label artists Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer, Thundercat and Ronald Bruner Jr. The Bookery Cook ladies had the pleasure of cooking dinner for the crew before their Brisbane show and the warehouse after party.
Here is some footage from the evening…
Established by Flying Lotus, the Brainfeeder label is responsible for producing some of the freshest, quality sounds redefining the boundaries between electronic, hip hop and jazz music.
Flying Lotus‘s signature jazz-fused beat-centric electronic avant-garde sound was picked up by Warp Records in 2007. Great nephew of Alice Coltrane and cousin of Ravi Coltrane Mary Anne Hobbs remarked that “Hendrix obliterated the boundaries with guitars as Lotus does with electronic machines,”. Brisbane has been lucky to see Flying Lotus in 2008, 2009 and 2010 thanks to good friends and promoters Dank Morass.
Gaslamp Killer (William Bensussen), resident at the legendary Low End Theory club night in LA, creates his own genre-bending take on psyche, hip hop and grunge, cutting up tunes and destroying dance floors. His live shows are embellished with his unrelenting energy, hair, and shamanlike dance moves.
Brothers Steve “Thundercat” Bruner and Ronald Bruner Jr are the offspring of world-class drummer Ronald Bruner Sr, who laid down the beat for Diana Ross, the Temptations, Gladys Night and others.
Thundercat (who derives his name from being a bass-driven jazz cat and an unhealthy childhood obsession with the show). He is responsible for the bass on FlyLo’s Cosmogramma, records with Erykah Badu, is Robert Trujilio’s replacement in seminal punk band Suicidal Tendencies, and in 2010 released his debut EP The Golden Age of Apocalypse.
Ronald Bruner Jr is a Grammy Award winning drummer, composer and producer has been drumming since the age of 2. Bruner can drop the names of having played with great artists such as Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Ron Carter, Kenny Garrett, Stanley Clarke, George Duke and Marcus Miller.
So we decided to cook up something soulful, filling, nutritious and suitably regal – a Middle Eastern banquet. This is an absolute Bookery Cook classic, one of our all-time favourite meals.
On the menu…
Watermelon & feta salad
Fresh pita bread
Homemade chilli sauce
The dinner party was good times, with GLK airing himself by the fan in kitchen while he helped us prepare dinner bits, Thundercat dazzled us with his adornments and Ronald Bruner Jr entertained the ladies at the dinner table. FlyLo’s computer had crashed that morning and he was unfortunately unable to attend dinner, so a packed lunch pack was provided (and we heard thoroughly enjoyed!) 😀 😀
Then it was time to P.A.R.T.Y !
First, the show at The Tivoli. The line up included Promoter’s for the evening the Dank Morass lads – Walrii, Danck & Swob, then Hermitude (replacing Hudmo, who was absent due to injury), the mother f$#&ing Gaslamp Killer, and then Flying Lotus joined by bassist Thundercat and drummer Ronald Bruner Jr.
Special big ups also go out to the very talented Megan Cullen for taking this amazing footage, Jerry Poon for organising the Australian tour, ATLASt (Warren Handley) & Archie Lancaster (Joe Baker) who were responsible for dope visuals on the night (and are also Bookery Cook artists), Sean & Raff for getting the warehouse in ship shape, and Samuel Dunn for fixing Flylo’s broken laptop and saving the show!
