We are pleased as punch to announce a new BC collaboration, and to help you all become more fruitful gardeners! For all you greenthumbs and aspiring greenthumbs (yes rosemary does count) Mat and Fabian from Melbourne’s Little Veggie Patch Co will be providing a list of what to plant each month, and some tips. So get out your trowls, watering cans and compost, turn up the radio and put some beers on ice. It’s time to get your hands dirty.

In the Southern Hempisphere winter is upon us which means planting vegetables and herbs that fare well in chillier times. You know the ones… those that are perfect in hearty soups or roasted alongside a fat cut of meat, and that provide much-needed nutrients and sustenance to keep us warm and nourished.

What to Plant

Beetroot
Broad Beans*
Brussel Sprouts*
Onions
Spring Onions
Carrots
Cabbage*
Cauliflower*
Kohl Rabi*
Lettuce
Silverbeet
Spinach
Rocket
Peas
Turnip
Kale
Parsnip
Radish
Coriander
Perennial Herbs (rosemary, thyme, oregano, sage etc… Not basil!)

It’s getting a little late for vege marked with an * – if you grow them now, you won’t be harvesting until into spring. Quicker harvesting types such as lettuces, spring onions, radish and beetroot may be a better choice.

Happy gardening !
