In honour of the 50th anniversary of Warhol’s iconic artwork, Campbell’s has released four different limited edition labels for their condensed tomato soup. Each label features bright colours reminiscent of Warhol’s work, an image of the man himself, and one of his sayings.
When Warhol first produced his work, Campbells were going to take legal action for his unauthorised use of their branding. But after making a fortuitous decision to hold off until they found how the work was received by the public, they are now able to use it to their advantage, to splash a bit of Warhol neon to their beige sales figures.
Not that Warhol should have a problem with this, who is known for saying, ‘Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art’.
The 1.2 million cans will cost 75 cents each and are available from Target.
