Who doesn’t need another condiment in their life? This sweet and sour spiced number can be eaten in liberal amounts with curry, spruce up eggs or avocado on toast, spread liberally on sandwiches, served with a roast, or plattered up with cheese and crackers.

Spiced Tomato Chutney

  • 1kg tomatoes, diced
  • 2 onions, peeled and diced
  • 3 green apples, peeled and diced
  • 2/3 cup cider vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 5 cardamom pods
  • 2 Tablespoons fresh ginger root, minced
  • salt (a lot!)

Combine all ingredients in large saucepan over a medium-high heat. Bring to the boil, then reduce to a low heat and simmer for 1-1/2 hours, stirring occasionally, until mixture is thick and jammy. Adjust salt to taste.

Keeps in the fridge for a few weeks, or store in sterilized jars for several months.

Wrap a bow around a jar for a great little gift!
